The Games is both hilarious and silly from the start. With witty dialogue, comical songs and creative prop and puppetry use, the cast of three truly pull you into their imagined world of Ancient Greece on the road to Olympia to compete in the Olympic Games.
We open with the Gods, as they decide to play their tricks on three mortals, each in a bid to win a debate amongst themselves about the true nature and competitiveness of man.
Our three mortals, Darrius (Liam Tobin – who also plays Zeus), Stanzas (Jamie Wood – who also plays Hercules) and Hermaphrodite (Lauren Silver – who also plays Hera), meet on their travels to Olympia and quickly form a ‘brotherly’ bond. However, it isn’t long before the God’s step back in…
What follows is love, fear, jealousy. and the aptly named Hermaphrodite repeatedly losing her ‘man parts’ – a tragedy for the poor girl as she has recently learnt that only men can compete in the games! Alas, it wouldn’t be Greek without a tragedy.
Sure to tickle your inner child, The Games is a brand new show by Spike Theatre, which premiered last night at The Met, Bury’s Live Art’s Venue in the town centre. The method and simplicity in the way this show is set is akin to how this writer presumes plays used to be performed and is in itself, a tribute to the skills and talents of the cast and crew.
(Spike theatre was established in 1997 and is a small-scale, touring, theatre company with an emphasis on exploring and developing a bold style of storytelling using physical creativity)
